UK Credit Cards - Your choice

What are UK Credit Cards? How is it that foreign banks such as American Express can run credit cards in the UK - surely they work in dollars?

Well, of course possible for them to work in both pounds and dollars! Having said that, there are many many UK banks and building societies that offer credit cards in pounds sterling alone. You can see a variety of the cards on offer in our table below. The benefits you can get do depend on the kind of card that you choose and vary from charitable gifts, to zero percent balance transfer periods, to lifetime low percentage balance transfer fees and free-of-interest purchase periods.

Credit cards usually come in two flavours - VISA and Mastercard. There is no real difference between the two as far as usage in this country is concerned, although there have been instances where people have tried to use VISA abroad and been told that only Mastercard is accepted, and vice versa.

Other cards have their own systems eg American Express and Discover cards. You can get many different American Express cards but Discover are much rarer in this country.

Cards come with a variety of "APR - Annual Percentage Rate". Put simply this is the amount of money that you would pay the company if you held the debt for one year. So a rate of 10% means if you had a balance of £100 with a company for a year, you would end up owing them £110 (10% more than the original sum). There are complications as with all these items regarding when the interest is 'counted' from, whether the interest is calculated on a daily or monthly basis and so on. You must read the Terms and Conditions of your specific card to be happy with the way that each card operates, but the "APR" is a common form of measurement across the credit card market.

Our table below lists current offers for UK Credit Cards - compare the lowest interest rate credit cards with others that have other benefits and features. Check rates for low apr credit card offers. For more information, select the link at the right hand side to go to dedicated package pages.
